14 DAY CHALLENGE
revised 1/19/19
Want to make eating healthy less of a challenge. Planning on trying to get healthy next year. Wait until after the holidays. Buy some healthy Whole Grain bread, healthy whole grain cereal (Cheerios Multi Grain is good), some healthy uncured lunch meats, and a Spider Man lunch pail so you can pack some lunches. Then try going 14 days without eating any Fast Food, restaurant ground beef, or restaurant French fries. Then if you give in, see if you do not feel bad. We eat so much fast food, that we are constantly under its negative side effects, and we think the way we feel is normal. I guess we need to know good to know bad. By avoiding Fast Foods that tend to be high in Trans Fat, we can actually experience how normal feels. Then when we give in and eat something that makes us feel rundown, heavy, full or lethargic, then we realize what makes us feel bad, and then we may lose our hunger or desire for those foods that are NOT good for us. Then we do not diet. Instead, we gradually, willingly choose to transition to a HEALTH JOURNEY. Many health experts tell us it is very difficult to lose weight if we feel hunger. If our body senses starvation, it slows our metabolism, causing us to store calories and fat to protect us from starvation. I have read that many fast foods are so over processed that they have lost their nutrients. Many also contain substantial amounts of Trans Fats, (anything Hydrogenated). I have also read that Trans Fats interfere with our body’s ability to absorb nutrients. So while our hunger for excess sodium, the taste of fat and our stomachs may feel satisfied by consuming those foods, our body is still starved for nutrients. That makes many fast foods a double edge sword. Not only are they loading our bodies with excess fats, they are causing our bodies to store the fat. That’s why it is important to start each day with a nutritional breakfast such as fruits, protein rich eggs, low sugar vitamin fortified whole grain cereals such as Multi Grain Cheerios or at least an apple and a Kind or Kashi Bar. Then keep nutritional snacks handy to avoid feeling hunger and eating Fast Foods and we then maintain a healthier metabolism. If we can maintain a healthier metabolism, it helps prevent us from regaining weight if we slip up on our health journey.
As we get away from restaurant food, we sometimes need to retrain our taste. Many restaurant foods, processed, and prepackage foods get their flavor by loading up with Sat fats, Trans Fats (hydrogenated oils), and sodium. Therefore we tend to be somewhat addicted to those flavors. I have learned to use good fats such as canola and olive oil, natural herbs and spices such as onion salt, garlic, salt, cayenne pepper and parmesan cheese to add flavor to bland foods. I suggest visiting the herb and spice aisle of the grocery store and experimenting with a variety of new flavors that may be added to food without the destructive side affects of bad fats and sodium. Many experts claim that many of the richer spices such as cayenne pepper actually boost out metabolism and increase the burning of calories. I have also read that onion, garlic, cumin and cayenne are 4 of the top 5 natural antibiotics, so by adding these spices to our foods we are not only boosting our metabolism and our immune systems.
Once we retrain our tastes to the flavors of good fats and natural spices, typical bad fat, high sodium foods do not taste as good to us any longer and we become less attracted to those unhealthy addictive flavors.
