Theology Chapter One:
The Basics
These writings are not intended to be teachings or change anybodies' heartfelt belief. I do not want these writings to be divisive of my Church or Home Group in any way. I am not intending to push my beliefs on anybody. These writings are intended to give an answer to everyone who asks about the hope that I have.
I was born, raised, and confirmed Catholic. In August of 2002, thanks to my wife's encouragement, she, my 11 year old daughter, my 8 year old son and my self started to attend White River Christian Church in Noblesville IN. Shortly after that I started reading and studying the Bible. Shortly after that I started reading and studying Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. In Sept. 2004. My wife and I started hosting a Home Group every other Friday night, which continues to remain very informative and stable, thanks to the extraordinary leadership of Michel Lankford.
I am not a reader. Since High School, I have read 4 books: The Bible, Purpose Driven Life, The Janitor and recently Quiet Strength. I highly recommend all 4. I also study many websites including, the lamblion.com of Dr. David R. Reagan, and letusreason.org of Mike Oppenheimer.
I do not always agree with everything my Church does and teaches, but the large majority of what WRCC does is awesome. The Church is great for our children and because of WRCC and the wonderful staff there, our children will not be 40 years old by the time they first start to read and study the Bible. I am confident that a large majority of the happiness in the lives of my wife, and children, and I, stems from our relationships with Jesus, our Church Family and our Home Group Family.
At the time we first started attending the Church, I had spent the previous 30 years working at least every other Sunday. When I started intending to spend Sunday mornings in Church, all of a sudden my job changed and I haven't been expected to work Sundays since. At the time we first decided to start hosting Home Group on Friday nights, I had spent the previous 30 years working every Saturday. When we intended to start spending Friday evenings hosting Home Group, which would have made going to work very early on Saturday morning very difficult, all of a sudden my job changed again and I have seldom been expected to work Saturdays since. This is just one of many the times that I have witnessed God working in my life.
All scriptures listed below are from the NIV Bible translation unless otherwise noted. PDL refers to info from Purpose Driven Life. The page numbers are of my giant print Bible.
I believe that my first interest should be making sure that I am doing what the Bible tells me I need to do to be saved:
p.1744-ROMANS 10:9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord" and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (10)For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
p.1744-ROMANS 10:13 for, everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
p.1573-MARK 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believed will be condemned.
p.1678-ACTS 2:38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, everyone of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
p.1635-JOHN 3:3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.
p.1636-JOHN 3:5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. (6)Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. (7)You should not be surprised at my saying, you must be born again.
p.1732-ROMANS 2:7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality, he will give eternal life.
p.1628-LUKE 23:42 Then he said, Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom. (43)Jesus answered him, I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.
p.1706-ACTS 16:30 He then brought them out and asked, Sirs what must I do to be saved? (31)They replied, believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved-you and your household.
I believe that my second interest should be saving others, because the sooner I do, the sooner Jesus may return. The Great Commission of Jesus is recorded several times-Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20, and Acts 1. The Great Commission instructs everybody who is saved and baptized, to pass it on:
p.1539-MATTHEW 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
p.1527-MATTHEW 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
p.285-286-PDL Speculating on the exact timing of Christ's return is futile, since Jesus said he didn't know the day or hour, why should we try to figure it out. What we do know for sure is this: Jesus will not return until everyone that God wants to hear the Good News, has heard it. If you want Jesus to come back sooner, focus on fulfilling your mission, not figuring out prophecy.
I believe that when I serve others, it pleases Jesus. I feel closest to God when I am serving:
p.1747-ROMANS 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship.
p.1491-MATTHEW 5:15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. (16)In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven.
p.1869-1 PETER 4:10 Each one of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.
p.1799-EPHESIANS 2:10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared for us in advance.
p.1861-JAMES 2:26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
p.1747-ROMANS 12:6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. (7)If it is serving, let him serve, if it is teaching let him teach, (8)if it is encouraging, let him encourage, if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously, if it is leadership, let him govern diligently, if it is showing mercy let him do it cheerfully.
NLT- 1 CORINTHIANS 12:7 A spiritual gift is given to each one of us as a means for helping the entire Church.
p.134-PDL God has a unique roll for you to play in his family. This is called your ministry, and God has gifted you for this assignment.
p.228-229-PDL Another term for serving God that's misunderstood by most people is the word ministry. When most people hear ministry, they think of pastors, priests, and professional clergy, but God says every member of his family is a minister. In the Bible, the words servant and minister are synonyms, as are service and ministry. If you are a Christian, you are a minister, and when you are serving, you're ministering.
I believe that I should not waste time trying to convert people of slightly different beliefs or religions. At one of our Church's Town Hall Meetings, our Senior Pastor said it well; "I do not want to compete against other churches. I would rather lock arms with other churches to evangelize as many as possible". I admire those who have the passion and diligence to go door to door trying to save the lost. I believe Saved is Saved. Once I believe somebody is saved, I should go on to the next door. I should not invest extraordinary amounts of time trying to convert others to my entire belief system. My passion and efforts can be more efficiently utilized pursuing lost sheep:
p.1610-LUKE15:3 Then Jesus told them this parable: (4)"Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? (5)And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders (6)and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, rejoice with me, I have found my lost sheep (7)I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous who do not need to repent.
p.1867-1 PETER 2:12 Live such good lives among the pagans that though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
p.1747-ROMANS 12:16 Live in harmony with one and other. Do not be proud but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
p.1586-LUKE 5:30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of their sect complained to his disciples, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?" (31)Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. (32)I have not come to call the righteous, but the sinners to repentance.
I believe there are plenty of good, knowledgeable people of all the various Religions that do not agree with other good knowledgeable people of the exact same Religion, many times of the exact same Church. Sometimes the Bible is a little unclear, sometimes down right confusing. I believe that if the Bible is so clear, I would not have so much trouble achieving the same interpretation from various Christian sources. I should see the different interpretations as a chance to be teachable. And remember that different is only different. Different does not need to be right or wrong. I should avoid becoming so prideful that I must be right. I believe that I may disagree with gentleness, respect, and patience.
p.1704-ACTS 15:39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, (40)but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. (41)He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
p.1868-1 PETER 3:15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.
In a recent sermon our Assistant Pastor said, "How do we show humility? The very first thing is to be teachable. The Wisemen were teachable. Have I allowed myself to be teachable, humble, to think I don't know it all, I don’t have all the answers."
I believe the Muslims pray better than many of us Christians. I believe the Elders of the Mormon Church that came to my home, do an extraordinary job representing their church. I believe that the Catholic Church does a lot of things right. I disagree with several things the Muslims, Mormons and Catholics teach, but I believe that everyone matters to God. Although I do believe most strongly in the teachings of the Christian Bible and my Christian Church, I hope I always continue to ask questions, to improve my own understanding. And I want to accept those who are saved, without passing judgment on others over disputable matters, even if they follow slightly different beliefs. I would rather pray for infidels than allow my pride to impose on them in any way:
p.1749-ROMANS 14:1 Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters. (22) So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves.
There is quite a controversy over whether Old Testament Laws apply to Christians. Many reliable Christians, including Dr. David R. Reagan and Michel Oppenheimer, have written that Old Testament Laws do not apply to Christians. Many good Christians teach and believe that Old Testament Laws do apply to Christians. I believe that as a Christian. I should not follow what is written in ink or on tablets of stone. I should always read and study God's word entirely, both Old Testament and New Testament, for the New Testament can not be properly appreciated and understood apart from the Old Testament. I should then prayerfully seek the authorization of Jesus as to what I should follow:
NLT-MATTHEW 7:22 On judgment day, many will tell me lord, lord. We prophesied in your name, we cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name (23)But I will reply, I never new you. Go away, the things you did were unauthorized.
And then follow what is written in my heart, by the Holy Spirit.
p.1778-2 CORINTHIANS 3:3 You show that you are a letter from Christ, The result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. (4)Such confidence as this is ours through Christ before God. (5)Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. (6)He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit, for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. (7)Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, fading though it was, (8)will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious. (9)If the ministry that condemns men is glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness.
If I can keep what is written in my heart between myself and God, I avoid arguing with others:
p.1832-2 TIMOTHY 2:23 Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. (24)and the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. (25)Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth.
p.1832-2 TIMOTHY 2:14 Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value and only ruins those who listen.
p.1838-TITUS 3:9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.
I believe there are extremists of all religions who use smooth talk and flattery to manipulate and force their naive followers to swallow their teachings to feed their own pride, ego, and greed.
I believe there are others of many religions who mean well, whose motives are totally unselfish. But they let there strong desire to save the lost, cloud their judgment, to the point of stretching sound doctrine a bit.
p.1834-2 TIMOTHY 4:2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction. (3)For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
Above all, I must remember and live the greatest Commandments:
p.1525-MATTHEW 22:37 Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all you heart and all your soul and with all your mind. (38)This is the first and greatest commandment. (39)And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself, (40)All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.
NLT-ROMANS 12:9 Don't just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Stand on the side of good. (10)Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.
