GREAT GUACAMOLE Most of my life I have loved Mexican food. The spicier the better. My family I frequent good sit down Mexican restaraunts every where we go. My Wife makes great Mexican dinners at home. Though my wife has always enjoyed it, I have refused to eat Guacamole. The name of it sounded awful and the green gooey appearance certainly did not look like something I ever wanted to put in my mouth. As my attitude turned from Living to Eat, to Eating to Live and I kept hearing about all of the health benfits of the hideous looking goo, I was compelled to try it from time to time over recent years. It usually did not taste that bad, but it was usually a little too bland to win me over. Then this past Spring Break, the family and I were at one of our favorite Mexican restaraunts in Ft Myers, Fl, where the Server made fresh Guacamole at our table. He used fresh Avocado along with a variety of veggies and spices. It was fantastic and I was hooked. My family and I were wishing we had paid closer attention to how it was made so we could attempt to make it at home. Then this past weekend, my wife and I were at Mexican restaraunt in Louisville, Kentucky, where my wife and I ordered some Guacamole and a side of Pico de Gallo. I mixed a little of the two together and it was fantastic. My wife and I realized that we could conveniently recreate that great Guacamole that we had experienced in Florida at home. Just this past week, my wife, God Love her, perfected a very convenient, healthy recipe for homemade Guacamole. I can't get enough of it. If you are looking for a GREAT snack with minimal guilt and a ton of health benefits, you should give it a try sometime.
But first, what is Guacamole?
Guacamole is a thick dip made primarily from mashing avocadoes and mixing with chopped tomato, onion, lime juice, cilantro, hot peppers, salt, pepper and cumin.
Anyway, onto the health benefits of guacamole…
The Avocado is considered to be a super fruit loaded with anti oxidants. It also contains a carotenoid called Lutein, magnesium and monosaturated fats. The avocado helps to fight many forms of cancer (including breast and prostate) and improves skin tone. Some of the substances in avocado help to absorb nutrients from other foods.
The Lime Juice contains potassium and properties that strengthen the immune system. Research also shows that lime helps to cleanse the blood and liver.
The Cilantro contains an abundance of antioxidants and relieves bloating, urinary tract infections and indigestion.
The Onions in the Guacamole recipe can help to lower high blood pressure, remove heavy metals from the bloodstream and help to fight many forms of cancer.
I have read recently that the Capsaicin(component of peppers that creates the burning sensation) in hot Peppers helps to raise metabolism and increase the burning of calories. I have also read that Garlic, Onion, Cummin and Cayenne Pepper are 4 of the 5 top natural antibiotics.
Tomatos contain Lycopene. Lycopene is a vital anti-oxidant that helps in the fight against cancerous cell formation as well as many other kinds of health complications and diseases.
