HAMBURGERS
revised 1/19/19
In my opinion, restaurant ground beef A.K.A, the hamburger is what I call an FMD. Food of Mass Destruction. You can diet all you want and one or two restaurant burgers will likely ruin your efforts for the whole week. Because restaurant ground beef is generally loaded with Saturated Fat and TOO much Trans Fat. Many people are misled by the word ANGUS thinking it is a higher quality ground beef. Or the word GROUND CHUCK. In my opinion those are just fancy words to increase the price. Many of the best restaurant burgers, ANGUS, GROUND CHUCK or otherwise are 80/20 ground beef at best. Which means it is 80% Lean and 20% Fat. About 10 of Sat Fat per serving. Some is worse than that getting down to 65/35 around 12g of Sat Fat per serving. Ground beef does not normally have Trans Fat, however many restaurants add it to their ground beef or the toppings making bad for you, worse for you. Even the word STEAK Burger is worse for you than it sounds.
For example:
McDonalds Angus Deluxe=17g Sat Fat, 2g Trans Fat
Steak and Shake Royale Steakburger=12g Sat Fat, 1.5g Trans Fat
Whopper w/o Cheese=20g Sat Fat, 1g Trans Fat
Hardees Thickburger=17g Sat Fat (either does not have Trans Fat or doesn’t admit it)
Hardees Frisco=20g Sat Fat (either does not have Trans Fat or doesn’t admit it)
Applebees Quesadilla Burger=43g Sat Fat, 3g Trans Fat
Five Guys Cheeseburger=26g Sat Fat
Nachos Bell Grande=7g Sat Fat, .5g Trans Fat
With numbers like those it is easy to get discouraged. I have yet to find a ground beef item in a restaurant that did not have harmful amounts of Saturated Fat and Trans Fat. A Taco Bell Taco has only 4g of Sat Fat but it only has about 2oz of beef and if it takes me at least 3 tacos to make a meal, I quickly have a dozen g. of Sat Fat. I love Mexican food but I avoid the ground beefs and get the chicken.
This doesn’t mean that I have given up one of my favorite foods, the Cheeseburger. I just fire up the barbie and make my own Gourmaaay Cheeseburger. I buy Extra Lean ground beef, commonly all natural, grass fed 96/4 with only about 1.5g of Sat Fat per serving and ZERO Trans Fat. Store bought Certified Angus Ground Chuck is commonly 80/20 with 9g of Sat Fat or SIX times as much Sat Fat as the Extra Lean. Even Ground Turkey commonly has 2.5g Sat Fat per serving. Giving up the Sat Fat doesn’t mean that I give up flavor. I make a full half pound patty; top it with some onion salt, some garlic salt, a slice of pepperjack cheese, a couple slices of Oscar Mayer Fully Cooked Bacon, pickles, onion, jalapenos, lettuce and tomato for a total of about 7g of Sat Fat.
Thank you so much for visiting my Web Site. May God bless you and your family.
