RETRAINING OUR TASTES
Revised 1/1/20
One of the first steps that need to take place if we decide to start eating healthier foods, is retraining our taste especially if we have been in the habit of eating restaurant foods.
Sometimes the foods we typically eat are FMDs (foods of mass destruction). Very small amounts of such foods, are very destructive to our efforts to maintain healthy weights and eating habits. We can usually find substitutes or slight modifications that are much less destructive. Sometimes the substitutes do not taste exactly the same. But once we get used to them and start to see positive results, the new foods may start to taste better to us than the old FMD versions.
Many restaurant foods, processed, and prepackage foods get their flavor by loading up with Sat fats, Trans Fats (partially hydrogenated oils), and sodium. Therefore we tend to be somewhat addicted to those flavors. I have learned to use good fats such as canola and olive oil, natural herbs and spices such as onion salt, garlic salt, cayenne pepper and parmesan cheese to add flavor to bland foods. I suggest visiting the herb and spice aisle of the grocery store and experimenting with a variety of new flavors that may be added to food without the destructive side affects of bad fats and sodium. Many experts claim that many of the richer spices such as cayenne pepper actually boost our metabolism and increase the burning of calories without adding significant calories. I have also read that onion, garlic, cumin and cayenne are 4 of the top 5 natural antibiotics, so by adding these spices to our foods we are not only boosting our metabolism but we also boost our immune systems.
Some of us enjoy coffee. Which by itself really is not that bad for us. How ever if we are attached to FOOFOO coffees that have added flavors they commonly contain large amounts of sugar or Tran Fats. It is a good idea to get in the habit of choosing healthy additives for coffee flavoring. It may be a good idea to try to find flavored creams that are all natural or do not list hydrogenated oils, or mono or diglycerides in the ingredients. Coffees may also be flavored with Vanilla, Caramel, Cinnamon or Hazelnut extracts.
Once we retrain our tastes to the flavors of good fats and natural spices, typical bad fat, high sodium foods do not taste as good to us any longer and we become less attracted to those unhealthy addictive flavors.
