FEEDING THE SWEET TOOTH
Revised 1-1-20
I have a sweet tooth. Not so much for candy, but for desserts. Especially homemade desserts. One of the biggest problems with desserts is not just the high calories, but the high glycemic index of large amounts of sugar, may dramatically reduce our metabolism. So, many desserts not only cause us to gain fat, but by lowering our metabolism, we also store more fat.
To feed my sweet tooth, I combine ½ cup each of Multi Grain Cheerios, Fiber 1 Original and Fiber 1 Honey Squares in a bowl. Then I add some Stevia extract or honey and UNSWEETENED Almond Milk for a total of less than 300 calories. I occasionally add some raisins or a small banana. By adding the richness of the Almond Milk and the sweetness of the honey, to healthy cereal, I feel like I am having my cake and eating it too. I get the flavor of a dessert and I am gaining the health benefits of the Whole Grain Fiber without the health hazards of typical desserts.
I use cereals that all have very little sugar. By using honey to sweeten them; I can use less of it, because it is sweeter than sugar. The honey is easier on the digestive system and has a lower glycemic index thus it is less likely to reduce the metabolism. Honey is also said to boost the immune system, which I believe is true, because every time I eat honey, I always feel just wonderful afterwards.
The Almond Milks are available in a variety of flavors. However unless we get the unsweetened versions they tend to have a large amount of sugar added. Overall, all natural Almond Milks are healthier than milk, rich in anti-oxidants, having 50% MORE calcium and 50% FEWER calories than skim milk.
Because Almond Milks have a very long self life and do not need refrigerated until they are opened, they are convenient to take along with a bag of my cereal mix when I travel. If I expect to stay in a Hotel without a fridge, I take the Chocolate or Vanilla Almond Milk in 8oz cartons. While the smaller cartons are not available unsweetened, they have about the same amount of sugar as skim milk and all the health benefits of the Almond Milk and make cereal seem like a dessert.
Like I said, I have a weakness for desserts that I too often give in to. However, I do avoid store bought desserts like the plague. While most desserts are high in sugar and Sat Fat, many store bought and restaurant desserts also have very harmful amounts of Trans Fat.
