5 P's of HAPPY HEALTHY LIVING
Do you know anyone that has lost 20 or more pounds and kept it off for 10 yrs or more.
I lost over 50 pounds, 25% of my total weight.
I have kept it off going on 25 years.
My cholesterol totals and ratios have also always been healthy.
NO KETO
NO WHOLE 30
NO FASTING
NO COUNTING CALORIES
NO GYM MEMBERSHIP
NO SURGERY
NO HUNGER
I've recently realized. That for the last 5 years or so. My HEALTH JOURNEY has focused on 5 P words:
P rotein, mostly lean meat but also legumes
P rebiotics, ANYthing with FIBER or LIVE cultures
P robotics, low or no sugar Yogurt with live active PROBIOTICS
P ush-ups or other strenuous exercise or activity.
P artners
For me it is easier, healthier, more effective and more sustainable to focus on those 5 Ps than it is to count calories, do Keto or do intermittent fasting.
I'm confident that PROTEIN VARIETY is beneficial. Lean PROTEINS such as fish, chicken eggs tend to offer more protein per calorie. And are easier to digest and therefore better for gut health. About a fourth of the meat I eat is UNPROCESSED, UNCURED red meat. The rest of the meat I eat is a LOT of fish and poultry. While our bodies do not absorb some nutrients as well from plants as we do from meat. Legumes do offer low calorie PROTEIN variety and the added benefits of fiber which is gut health friendly PREBIOTIC. Nuts are also a good source of PROTEIN. They also have good fats and many such as Almonds have a decent amount of FIBER, Nuts are generally a healthier energy boost snack than sweets, crackers, chips or common bag snacks.
Numerous gut health experts insist that variety of gut microbes is very beneficial to gut health. While PREBIOTICES feed and benefit gut microbes that we already have. By consuming a variety of PROBIOTIC yogurts. We add variety to our gut microbes.
I'm confident that if our food consumption is focused on LEAN PROTEIN from low fat meats and PROTEIN from Legumes, nuts and other high fiber plants, we will very likely feel more full and feel less hunger on fewer calories and maintain lower weight. I like Nutrition Labels that show PROTEIN and/or FIBER.
Almost all of our dinners are a LEAN meat PROTEIN with a fiber rich PREBIOTIC side.
For almost the entire 25 years of my HEALTH JOURNEY. I have done as many PUSH-UPS as I can, 3-4 days per week. I occasionally rotate to sit ups or crunch bicycles. I'm confident the PUSH-UPS do a better job maintaining my metabolism making good use of the PROTEIN I consume to burn calories.
All exercise is good. My own experience and advice of many fitness experts tells me that strength exercises or strenuous activities are more effective for weight management than cardio such as walking or running. That would make walking up and down steps or hills, more effective than walking on flat surfaces. If a person hasn't done PUSH-UPS since High School. Try doing as many as you can, three times a week. Each week try to add a few. Or try planks. There are plenty of You tube videos about all kinds of STRENGTH exercises. I’ve heard multiple fitness experts and trainers say 5 minutes of STRENGHT exercise is equivalent to 20 minutes of cardio. I long ago told myself that failing to find 5 minutes to spare to do PUSH-UPS or sit ups would be a sad excuse for not exercising. Gyms are great and very effective for a lot of people, I’ve never had a gym membership. I’ve just exercised at home. Weight can be lost without exercise. My HEALTH JOURNEY has not been just about weight loss. It’s about being healthy. It has been my experience that STRENGTH exercises have helped me maintain my weight loss through many years.
The first 4 P's, Protein, Probiotics, Prebiotics, Push ups, ALL boost metabolism which makes weight loss easier and more long term.
The last and MOST important P= PARTNERS. I think it is very hard for a person to practice healthy habits if they are the only person in the household participating. Early on in my HEALTH JOURNEY, my wife and children PARTNERED with me in practicing healthier eating habits. While my kids were very young, they would look at labels in grocery stores and if they saw unhealthy ingredients or nutrition info, on their own initiative, they would put it back and look for an alternative. My wife and kids avoided bringing junk foods into the house. It may not be necessary for the entire family to be fully on board with the HEALTH JOURNEY, but I believe that having at least 1 PARTNER especially under the same roof, is extremely beneficial. To offer support, encouragement and gentle accountability.
About 10 years ago, I started to slip off the wagon a little, Eating more foods of mass destruction and exercising less and gaining a little weight. Averaging well above my goal range. About that time a good friend asked me if I would be interested in coaching him to a healthier life style. While we PARTNERED on our HEALTH JOURNEY, I quickly realized that the timing of my new PARTNERSHIP was more significant and beneficial to me than it was to the person I was supposed to be coaching. The timing could not be coincidence, because we both benefited in ways that we could have never imagined. My friend recently made history as the second oldest Navy Recruit in U.S. history and THE oldest Navy Chaplain. And as I become a 64 year old goat, I am doing more PUSH-UPS than ever.
My friend and I always invited the MOST important PARTNER to join us: JESUS. There is no doubt in my heart, mind and soul that neither one of us would be where we are on our HEALTH JOUNEY without JESUS as our PARTNER.
I know one person that has had similar longevity and overall success on her HEALTH JOURNEY as I have had. While our methods may be noticeably different, one thing I KNOW that we have in common is that she most definitely PARTNERS with JESUS.
